The Theory Test

Before you can book a driving test, you must have passed your driving theory test. You can take this any time from your 17th birthday onwards and I would recommend taking it as early as possible: delaying it might also delay your practical test, especially with the waiting list for tests resulting from the Covid lockdowns. (You can apply for a provisional licence when you are 15 years and 9 months!)

The test consists of a 50-question multiple choice paper, and fourteen hazard perception clips. That might sound easy, but since 2013 the pass rate has dropped. Nationally, in December 2020 the pass rate was 55.7%, while in Aldershot, our local theory test centre, it was 58.1%. (Female candidates, at 60.4%, outshone males, at 56.0%) If you want to pass first time, you need to study!

There are several apps available to help you out. I recommend Theory Test Pro, and for my pupils, I make the full (paid-for) version available for free! There is also some essential literature, most notable the highway code, and the know your road signs book, both available from Amazon, as well as W.H. Smiths, Waterstones, and others. Other literature includes the DVSA Theory Test book, and Driving, The Essential Skills. To buy these from Amazon, please click on the links below.

Have fun studying!
